Steak at the Boathouse in Dawlish Warren

Steak at the Boathouse in Dawlish Warren

During the middle of September we had a weekend away in Dawlish Warren in Devon, it was a lovely long weekend exploring the local area and we had some really lovely meals. The best meal was the one I had on the first night at the Boathouse in Dalish Warren. The Boathouse is a great pub we felt very welcome on all of our visits and on our first day it was a nice sunny afternoon so we had our drinks in the outside area overlooking the sea and blue skies. Bliss!

The meals we had were great I went for the steak which was on a weekday offer at a bargain price and included dessert (I can't remember the exact price but im sure it was under ten pounds on this deal). The portions were huge which was great after a long day of travelling/sightseeing without a lot to eat and the food was delicious! The Boathouse is a fab & friendly pub and is definitely worth a visit when your in Dawlish Warren.

For more information on the menus and special offers check out this link for the Boathouse.

Christmas time!!

Christmas time!!

I can tell that its nearly Christmas time when I can get my favourite German christmas spekulatius biscuits from the shops! These are getting me me all excited for the German Christmas Market in Birmingham too :)

Whats your favourite christmas treat?

Delicious buttermilk Pancakes!

Heyyy there!

Hope you are all having a nice week! Ive got a nice little recipe here for buttermilk pancakes which can be made for breakfast or an after dinner treat :)

I had mine with toffee syrup, sugar and banana and they were delicious!
You can add blueberries or anything you want but this is the basic recipe for a plain lot of pancakes:

Ingredients:

3 eggs
125ml buttermilk
50g butter , melted
5 drops vanilla extract
160g plain flour (sieve twice)
1 tbsp golden caster sugar
3/4 tsp baking powder

First of all beat the eggs and a pinch of salt until frothy. Add the buttermilk, melted butter and vanilla and beat well. Mix the flour with the sugar and the baking powder then sieve together and add the dry mixture to the liquid and quickly beat just enough to make a smooth batter.

I used cooking spray but you can also put a little oil on a piece of kitchen roll and rub over a heavy-based frying pan. Heat the pan (but not too hot). Pour in a couple of spoonfuls for little pancakes, more for bigger ones. I used an ice cream scoop to get the mixture into the pan.

You could now sprinkle a few blueberries over the top of each pancake. Cook gently for a couple of minutes until the pancake is looking golden brown around the edges. Flip and cook for a further minute or so. Be careful when you lift them out. You may need to rub the pan with a little more oil between each batch. Serve with anything you fancy!

What would you put onto your pancakes?

First time baking white bread!

White Bread

Hi Guys!

Its been a while since I updated my blog but I have been happily baking away since my last post. Ive been trying to use my sparkly new kitchen appliance as much as possible and the thing ive been craving to try for a while was Bread but the thought of trying scared me until I found a recipe which seemed very straight forward and made me decide to put my dough hook to the test.

So here are the ingredients I used for a plain white loaf of bread...

Ingredients

500g Strong White Bread Flour
2 tsp salt
3 tbsps olive oil
7g sachet of fast acting yeast
300ml tepid water
Extra flour for dusting

You'll need quite a large bowl and start of by placing your flour, salt & yeast into the bowl. Make a whole in the middle and add the tepid water and oil and then bring the wet and dry ingredients together.

Now you can either flour your work surface and knead it by hand or if you have a food mixer with a dough hook attachment then use that to start the kneading. By hand you should knead for around 10minutes and with a mixer I did it for a little less time.

When you're happy with your dough wash out the bowl or take another bowl and brush this with oil so that your dough won't stick and out your dough into the oiled bowl and cover this with a teatowel or clingfilm and keep it somewhere nice and warm or just keep it in the kitchen at room temperature until your dough doubles in size. I covered mine with clingfilm and put the dough into my airing cupboard and I left it for just over an hour when it had doubled in size.

Knock back or punch your dough to bring it down a bit and place the bread onto a baking sheet moulding it into a ball shape or put it into a loaf tin if you would prefer a loaf. Leave to prove for another 30mins-1hour. When the time is up and your happy to bake it you can slash the top of the dough slightly with a knife. I put my bread into the oven at 220c (fan assisted) for 25minutes and here is my first ever loaf of homemade bread!!! :)

I know it takes a fair bit of time but trust me its such a great feeling and so worth while when you get your finished fresh white loaf out of the oven! :)

The arrival of my beautiful new Raspberry Ice Kitchenaid and a recipe for easy mashed potato KA style!

The arrival of my beautiful new Raspberry Ice Kitchenaid and a recipe for easy mashed potato KA style!

After drooling over Kitchenaids on all of the cookery shows I seem to watch I have finally ordered and received mine! Im so glad I waited because a few months ago I thought that I would get the Cranberry colour which didn't look as pink as I'd like it to and when I checked last week I saw that the relatively new Raspberry Ice colour was available in the UK and I just had to have it! Ive got so many ideas of what to make in it but I christened my new KA by doing a yummy mashed potato in it as I didn't have much time to be baking last night I found a recipe which enables me to use my new favourite toy whilst doing what I was already doing. The mash turned out beautifully creamy and soft with no lumps - perfect!! Now hopefully at the weekend I can finally bake a loaf of bread or make a lovely batch of cupcakes! yummy!!

Here is my beautiful Pinky all settled in and sitting proudly in our tiny kitchen!

Recipe for the mashed potato using the Kitchenaid or other stand mixer.

Ingredients
5 large potatoes (about 2 1/2 pounds), peeled, quartered and boiled
1/2 cup low-fat milk, heated
2 tablespoons butter or margarine
1 teaspoon salt
1/8 teaspoon black pepper

Preparation
1. Warm mixer bowl and flat beater with hot water; dry. Place hot potatoes in bowl. Attach bowl and flat beater to the KitchenAid Stand Mixer. Gradually turn to Speed 2 and mix until smooth, about 1 minute.

2. Add all remaining ingredients. Turn to Speed 4 and beat until milk is absorbed, about 30 seconds. Gradually turn to Speed 6 and beat until fluffy, about 1 minute. Stop and scrape bowl. Exchange flat beater for wire whip. Turn to Speed 10 and whip 2 to 3 minutes.

Mine did splash a bit so that might be because it was my first time using the mixer but be sure to put your splash guard on! :)

Please leave a comment and tell me your favourite mixer recipes...I need ideas! :)

Birthday Burrito in Red Peppers Birmingham!

Birthday Burrito in Red Peppers Birmingham!

Just a quick pick of my yummy birthday burrito which I ordered in Red Peppers Birmingham....

This was our first time at Red Peppers in the Mailbox and we had a lovely meal here the menu was big and had a lot of choice with lots of different flavours and the yummy flavours of the Burrito reminded me of being in Mexico on my summer holidays last year and now ive just seen the picture I feel like popping over to Red Peppers and ordering one for dinner hehe :)

An afternoon of Pottery Painting with the girls

An afternoon of Pottery Painting with the girls at All Fired Arts, Kings Heath

It was my friends birthday in July and we wanted to do something fun and girly and a little different and Jo the Birthday girl had recently been pottery painting and had really enjoyed it so we all booked in to go and have an afternoon of painting pottery whilst gossiping and nomming our way through some delicious cupcakes from Selfridges :) it was a lovely afternoon and I enjoyed the relaxing painting session a lot!

The place is called All Fired Arts and its in Kings Heath, Birmingham, if you're local to Birmingham and you're the creative type this is the place for you! You can take food and drink and if nobody was driving we may have even taken a bottle of wine. The lovely ladies in the shop do offer you tea/coffee/cordial so refreshments are all sorted. We took a box of cupcakes to nibble on whilst we were creating our masterpieces and we all had a great afternoon without the boys hehe

They have a huge selection of blank pottery which you can choose from, I spotted lots of things I liked from plates & mugs to teapots and gnomes there was everything! I then saw a triangle plate and thought that I could paint it to look like a slice of pizza and use it as a pizza plate forever more so I decided to go for that. So off we went to paint the pizza plate, lizard, plate & teapot.

I stared at my blank pizza plate for a while before deciding that I would try and make it look like my favourite pizza - ham & pineapple! I started drawing little hams and pinapples onto the blank canvas totally scared of messing it up haha

I drew them on with one of the pens and then coloured them with the chosen colours and it started coming together quite nicely although it didn't look great at this point I was told that the finished product would be shiny and gorgeous when it comes out of the kiln so I had my fingers crossed for good results! I finally mixed a few colours together to make a nice pizza crust and more cheese for inbetween the ham and pineapple.

Lastly I added some tomato dots and I even added herbs - I was very impressed with the last minute creative touches! Haha. We all left feeling pretty good about our pottery painting experience and left our pieces at the shop to go into the kiln and be finished off. We got a call to say our pottery was ready after just a couple of days so we were all very excited to go and pick them up and heres my finished glossy pizza plate which was done just in time for its first use at my birthday party :D

We paid full price and really enjoyed the experience but this week All Fired Arts have a discount voucher listed on KGB Deals under Birmingham which makes booking up even more tempting! Click here for the current KGB Deal Please bear in mind that this link is only valid until roughly the 10th Sept 2011 but can be used until the 11/12/11 so be quick and enjoy the experience and if you miss the voucher go anyway because its a really great afternoon or day out!

Vodka Jelly!

Vodka Jelly!

Helloooo there!

So as its nearly the bank holiday weekend and I thought I would add the recipe I use when I make yummy vodka jellies...Perhaps if you get time over the weekend you can try them out. I try and make them when we have people round because its something a bit different and everyone seems to like them! Usually I put the mixture into shot glasses but I have found that its hard to get the jelly out and this time I used a mixture of silicone bakeware which worked great....I also used my little rose moulds for the first time too - check out the perfect roses that I got out of the jelly mould! I was soooooo happy :)

Ingredients:

Fruit jelly (choose your flavour preference - Strawberry, Rasberry,
Orange or Lime work well - I usually use the powder type)
Vodka (cheap or quality brand Vodka, either will do)
Boiled Water
Cold Water

How to make Vodka Jelly

Mix the jelly as recomended on the packaging but only using 3/4 or 75%
of the recommended liquid.

Example

If a pint of water is recomended then follow this process to make your Vodka Jelly.
1) Boil 1/4 pint of water and mix the jelly in a bowl.

2) Add 1/4 pint of Vodka to 1/4 pint of cold water in a container.
Let the jelly mix cool slightly before pouring in the Vodka and cold water.(this is to prevent the alcohol evaporating)

3) Pour the finished Vodka Jelly mix into your chosen containers.
Containers can be ice cube containers, shot glasses, paper cups, ice cube bags or this time I used silicone bakeware.

4) The container needs to be placed into the fridge to set. The time to set Vodka Jelly will depend on your fridge temerature, the amount of vodka in the Vodka Jelly, and the size of the containers. Ideally it is best letting the Vodka Jelly set overnight or at least a few hours.

Have a look at my lovely vodka jellies...

Have fun trying this out & please take care making and drinking vodka jelly - it is very potent !!! :)

Cinnamon Nutella Cake for my upcoming 25th Birthday!

Cinnamon Nutella Cake

Hi Guys!

I hope your all having a lovely week! It is now my happiest time of year - Birthday month! With just over 1 week to go I have been trawling my cookbooks, my favourite blog Katiecakes and magazines to try and find the perfect Birthday cake to bake and bring to work and I think I have found it! Ive come across a yummy Cinnamon Nutella Cake ....It took me a while to register the fact that this cake has CINNAMON and NUTELLA in it! I love them both and the taste of either of them takes me back to my childhood. Especially the Nutella which reminds me of getting into trouble for eating spoonfuls of its straight out of the jar! Good times...NOM NOM NOM. Now I don't know how I havent thought of baking with Nutella before but this might just become a new obsession :)

I don't need to make the cake for another week but couldn't resist a test run just to make sure it was as yummy as it sounds hehe

This recipe is from Good Food magazine, March 2003

Ingredients

175g softened butter
175g golden caster sugar
3 eggs
200g self-raising flour
1 tsp baking powder
2 tsp ground cinnamon
4 tbsp milk
4 rounded tbsp Nutella or own-brand chocolate hazelnut spread
50g hazelnuts, roughly chopped

1) Preheat the oven to 180C/gas 4/ fan 160C. Butter and line the base of a 20cm round cake tin.

2) Put the butter, sugar, eggs, flour, baking powder, cinnamon and milk into a bowl. Beat with a wooden spoon for 2-3 minutes, or with an electric hand mixer for 1-2 minutes, until light and fluffy.

3) Tip three quarters of the mixture into the tin, spread it level, then spoon the Nutella on in four blobs (I made it into 8 smaller blobs so that the Nutella doesn't sink to the bottom) Top with the remaining mixture, swirl a few times with a skewer, then smooth to cover the Nutella.

4) Sprinkle with the nuts. Bake for 1 hour to 1 hour 10 minutes, until risen, nicely browned, feels firm to touch and springs back when lightly pressed (cover with foil if it starts to brown too quickly). Cool in the tin for 10 minutes, then turn out, peel off the paper and cool on a wire rack. Wrap tightly in double thick foil to keep fresh for up to a week.

I think this recipe is super easy, everything goes into one bowl and after a bit of swirling it goes into the oven! I don't think I put even near enough Nutella in though so next time ill be doubling the Nutella to make it even yummier!

Do you have any yummy Nutella recipes that ive been missing out on for years?!

Visit to Edinburgh - Day one - Dinner at The Dogs

First visit to Edinburgh!!!!!

Well I was very excited to visit Edinburgh for the first time after hearing how beautiful the city is. We got ourselves a flight with our airmiles (thank you Tesco clubcard!) and a very cheap Travelodge room which was great and right in the city centre so perfect for exploring during our short 2 night stay (Check it out - Edinburgh Central Waterloo Place).

I was also looking forward to eating out whilst being away and had been looking for information on places to eat in Edinburgh when I came across this fab article from The Guardian which lists Edinburgh's 10 best budget eateries. We had a quick mooch through this list when we arrived in Edinburgh and decided to book a table at The Dogs for that evening, I realise now that we were very lucky to get in as its such a popular restaurant!

We enjoyed the rest of the day by visiting the castle and seeing the changing of the guards, a trip to the Edinburgh Dungeons and trying out a few pubs. We had some lunch in All Bar One which was fine we all just had chicken baguettes to keep us going until the evening.

I spotted Lakeland opposite All Bar One and promised myself to have a nose through there before leaving Edinburgh as we don't have a Lakeland in Birmingham and I just love and adore it!

**The Dogs Restaurant in Edinburgh**

Finally time to go to The Dogs! I was quite excited to visit this quirky restaurant. We were seated and the waitress brought us a jug of water and menus. The menu had something for everyone without being huge so we didn't take long to decide what we were going to have, 2 of us went for the stargazy fish pie with puff pastry (£10.50), 1 of us had chicken and asparagus pie with mash (£10.25) and the last order was for the skirt steak, chips, smoked garlic butter (£11.75). I was tempted to have the steak myself but the fish pie sounded very interesting and I do love my seafood so I couldn't resist this.
The dining room was pretty small but the atmosphere was amazing, everyone was relaxed and having a great time. The Dog theme really stands out and makes it so unusual from huge pictures and statues to small dogs on cusions.
Our food arrived and it couldn't have been better, when I ordered my stargazer fish-pie the waitress had mentioned that there would be a sardine on the pie which could be easily removed I wasn't expecting it to be like this because I had never heard of a stargazer pie but it made it look really special...

I just pulled the head slightly and all of the bones came out leaving just the meat inside the pie. It was such a tasty pie and it included all of my favourite fish with a yummy pastry topping so I couldn't have asked for a better dish.

We all enjoyed our meals but were too full to have any desserts which is a shame as im sure they would be just as tasty.
I have been reading about The Dogs and can see that they have opened two more restaurants which are called amore dogs and the seadogs, we saw amore dogs as this is just a few doors away from The Dogs and its Italian themed, I don't know where The Seadogs restaurant is but I definitely want to try at least one if not both of these restaurants on my next visit to Edinburgh!

I hope you are having a great week so far and that you enjoyed my mini food review and information on my visit to Edinburgh!

Camelot Medieval Restaurant in Torquay

Camelot Medieval Restaurant in Torquay
4 Braddons Hill Road West, Torquay, Devon, TQ1 1BG

IN DAYS OF OLDE WHEN KNIGHTS WERE BOLD AND PIZZA WEREN'T INVENTED FOLK WENT DOWN TO CAMELOT AND FELT QUITE CONTENTED!

All I can say about this restaurant is WOW! I wish I lived closer to Torquay so that I could visit more often. We recently discovered this lovely little restaurant as we were away for a few days visiting Torquay, Paignton & Brixham. We are little Merlin geeks so the outside of this restaurant caught our attention straight away....

The inside was even better, its quite small but the medieval theme is fantastic! They have themed cocktails and even the plates are huge and you really feel as if you having a medieval feast!

The menu was huge and the choice of food was excellent. To start we went for the Camelot Dipper which they serve for 2 or for 4 people. This way we got to try a bit of everything as it was filled with potato wedges, camelot chicken wings, sauteed shell on prawns, green lipped mussels, scampi, onions rings, garlic bread, salad & dips. It didn't sound too huge until I just listed down the things on the platter and at the time we had no idea just how big the platter would be especially because for the two of us it was only £9.95 so we were only expecting a standard sharing platter but we were sooooo wrong and when it arrived it was huge but we couldn't have been happier because after a day of sightseeing we were very hungry and ready for our medieval feast they even had finger bowls which was great because normally I would hate to peel prawns and have chicken wings when im out because of the mess :)

Just check out the picture...nom nom NOM!....

After making our way through the starter we were pretty full but ready for our steaks. I had my steak with their Hunters Sauce which was a sauce of oven roasted shallots & whole button mushrooms, red wine & beef stock finished with a flat leaf parsley and it was fantastic!

We had a great time here and the waiter was very friendly as were the other customers who all couldn't believe how huge the portions were so I thought it was defintely worth mentioning on my blog with a little review for you all!

Have you got any themed restaurants in your area?

Light Omelette with Chives & Potatoes

Light Omelette with Chives & Potatoes

Hi Everyone,
I hope your having a fab week! This week I was on the hunt for a new lunch recipe because I was getting totally bored of taking my ham sandwiches to work and after a weekend of visiting the Food Fayre and going to the Good Food Show I just had food on the mind and felt hungry all the time and the boring old sandwich was just not filling me up! I decided to have a mooch through The Italian Diet (aka The I-Diet) the 2010 cookbook by Gino D'Acampo to get some ideas for a nice low calorie lunch to bring in for the next few days :)

This potato omelette is perfect for lunches or a light snack and its very easy to do with only a few ingredients and if you dont have the I-diet book then I definitely recommend getting it as it is full of all kinds of yummy low calorie Italian recipes from breakfast ideas, lunch, soups & salads, antipasti, pasta, pizzas, risotto, fish, meat & desserts! All this for under ten pounds....There are also used copies of this book on Amazon for less than a fiver! BARGAIN!

So here goes......

3x Large Potatoes (peeled and finely sliced)
1x Onion (finely sliced)
5x Eggs
Chopped Chives (I used dried coriander as I didn't have any chives)
Salt & Ground Black Pepper
3x Tbls of Olive Oil (I used fry light to lower the calories even more)

1) Preheat your oven to 170c/325F/gas mark 3 whilst you arrange the slices of potatoes onto a baking tray. Drizzle over 1 tablespoon of olive oil (or spray them with fry light) season and bake for 15mins.

2) Select an ovenproof frying pan approx 20cm diameter and 4cm deep and chop up the onion to fry in the remaining Olive Oil for 5 minutes while the potatoes are baking. In a bowl whisk the 5 eggs together and add the chopped chives to this mixture ready to pour over the potatoes and onions.

3) When the potatoes have done the 15mins layer them with the onions in the frying pan and when this is done pour the egg mixture over the potatoes, season and transfer the pan to the oven to cook for a further 30 minutes.

Take it out and slice it into wedges! :) This is delicious hot or cold.

My pictures aren't great but it gives you a general idea of what you will end up with - It does taste much better than it looks in my pic's and could easily be adapted with whichever flavours you wanted. Next time I may add some peppers and tomoatoes into it.

I turned my omelette out on a plate and then cut it into wedges.

Corn Flake Muffins

Corn Flake Muffins

Last week I decided that skipping breakfast all the time was not the way forward and just having a cereal bar for breakfast seemed very boring so I decided to have a look at making some breakfast muffins and I found a lovely recipe for cornflake muffins. I had a box of cornflakes in the cupboard which very rarely came out so saw this as the perfect opportunity to use some of them up! I dont think ive ever baked with cereal so I was interested in giving it a try and the result was 12 lovely cornflake muffins perfect for breakfast which can also be frozen to stop them from going bad if your the only one eating them :)

If your also bored of what your having for breakfast give these a go...

(12 servings)

1 and 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
1 Tablespoon baking powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/4 cup sugar
2 cups corn flakes
1 and 1/4 cup milk
1 egg
1/3 cup vegetable oil

1) Sift together flour, baking powder, salt and sugar. Set aside.

2) Stir corn flakes and milk together in a seperate large mixing bowl. Let stand about 2 minutes until cereal is softened. Add egg and oil to this mixture. Beat well. Add flour mixture to wet mixture, stirring only until combined. Portion butter evenly into 12 lightly greased muffin cases or muffin baking tray (I used silicone cases on a flat tray and it worked fine.. no spillage)

3) Bake at 200 degrees celsius for around 20 minutes or until lightly browned. Serve warm or leave to cool down and then freeze any that won't be eaten within 2 days.

I forgot to take pictures while I was preparing the mixture but I think that was mainly because of how quickly I had the mixture in the muffin cases ready to be baked!

I do however have a couple before and after shots below...

Yummy Courgette Cake!

Yummy Courgette Cake!

Well I got some courgettes which were on offer which really needed using as soon as possible. Usually I would use courgettes in pasta dishes but I was looking for something different and then I stumbled across a recipe for courgette cake! I remember a colleague of mine making Zucchini Bread a while ago and although I wasn't too sure about it I found that it tasted lovely.

I know the thought of cougettes in a cake doesn't sound too great but I thought I would try it out anyway and I was more than happy with this easy recipe and the end result!

Because I was feeling too lazy to pop down to Tesco I left out the cream cheese topping but I imagine this would go with the cake perfectly. The cake was amazing and very moist. Perfect.

Ingredients:

250g courgettes (grated)
2 large eggs
125ml vegetable oil
150g caster sugar
225g self-raising flour
1/2 teaspoon bicarb
1/2 teaspoon baking powder

Cream Cheese topping:
200g full fat cream cheese
juice of 1 lime
100g sieved icing sugar

1. Preheat the oven to 180C/Fan 160C/Gas Mark 4
2. Grate the courgettes with the coarse side of a grater, then turn them into a sieve over the sink to remove excess water
3. Beat the eggs, oil and sugar in bowl until nice and creamy
4. Sieve in flour, bicarb and baking powder and beat until well combined
5. Stir in courgette
6. Pour into tins and bake for 30 minutes until slightly browned and firm to touch
7. To make the cream cheese icing - mix the ingredients in a bowl, placing in the fridge if you like to firm up then spread over the cake

..The cake was super moist and freezes very well wrapped tightly in clingfilm, then a freezer bag or two

The above picture is mixing the ingredients together - steps 3 and 4.

Hope the pictures help and I do hope you try it out :) let me know what you think! And have you made any other unusual vegetable cakes before?

Fabulous meal at Miller and Carter - Mailbox

Fabulous meal at Miller and Carter - Mailbox

The new Miller and Carter steakhouse opened at the Mailbox in April and we just knew we had to go. I love my steaks and I certainly wasn't dissapointed!

We started off with their Sharing platter which really helped us out because it was way too difficult to choose which starter to have. The sharing platter had Creole prawns, buffalo chicken wings, garlic bread, cheddar mushrooms and a slice of Miller and Carters secret recipe onion loaf, served with chilli marmalade and BBQ dips

It was amazing! We really enjoyed it, unfortnately I haven't got a picture but it was yummy. The prawns and the mushrooms were my favourite. The Mushrooms had an amazing creamy sauce yumyum.

For my main course I had Sirloin Steak with their iceberg lettuce wedge drizzled with Caesar Dressing with Parmesan and Croutons, I think the picture sums up how awesome it was...

Their special recipe onion loaf was delicious and the steak was a-m-a-z-i-n-g my boyfriend had the Smoky Barbecue Chicken which he said was very good but he had major food envy and we both decided that when we go back again we will both be ordering steak!

The current offer on with the mailbox rewards card got us a free glass of Champagne each so that was another bonus! If you do visit the mailbox and don't have one of their reward cards sign up for the free card by following this link- http://www.mailboxlife.com/rewards/

We were way too full to have a dessert so we will have to try and leave room for one next time as we will definitely be back!
